C2 PROFICIENCY LEVEL MEANS... BECOMING MORE ACCURATE & CREATIVE.
IT MEANS FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE.

Have you noticed that every 2nd of February this movie is on TV? This science-fiction movie from the nineties is still being shown and I am happy to say that its repetition on the TV schedule every year makes me feel good.

There is something useful about watching, listening or reading classic stories repeatedly.
I watched it for the first time in my early teens and with the time I have opened my eyes to the transformative process that befalls to the main character, Phil Connors, whose name is shared with the large ground squirrel that forecasts the arrival of spring every year in Punxsutawney. Its shadow plays a key role in the prediction of an early spring.
What I have most enjoyed is the subtle poetic language in the script and the well-selected transition of images supporting the narration. To illustrate some of the climactic moments, I have jotted these paragraphs down, please forgive my writing.

The clouds in the blue sky open the first scene and are followed by a blue empty screen or chroma where the forecaster's hand -and later whole body- appears to give his weather predictions on TV. Somehow, he is acting like a TV star, shining like a light bulb in its own safe element. Nice way to open a story about the passage of time and about the difficulties that the principal character must go through. This first scene won't be closed until he, and so the spectator, meets Rita, his female charming companion to Pennsylvania. If there is a sun, there must be a moon.Rita in GroundHog DayIn the repetition of the same day and events he first tries to take advantage out of it, passes through a period of boredom and then meets in despair several times death. How to step out of this nightmare? The answer is Love, and Rita - the clean mirror to his eyes where spot his own shadow- plays a paramount role. The shadow, that unknown part of him, needs to be seen first and accomplished or integrated before predicting the arrival of his own spring.

She is definitely the counterpart of the main character. She is presented in the story as an intellectual romantic woman with high human values and clear standards -she always likes to toast to World Peace, to give you just a small detail about her. Thanks to her, the egocentric male character trapped in the coldest day of his life finds some warmth and meaning that helps him cope with his time-trapped scenario, especially after asking her: "Who is your perfect guy?"

From that moment, we all know he is going to do his best to become her "perfect guy".
How important is to say out loud the list of "must-be" rather than "must-have" to the guy we love. When she is being asked this crucial question, she answers so naturally and so freely that her spell is being cast effortlessly.
He starts helping people around: the homeless in the street, the old friend from school, the boy that falls from the tree, the old ladies in a car with a flat tire, the young couple... and what is more! he decides to nurture his own sensibility by expressing his frustrations and ideals through Art. Yes, ART! From now on, he is going to read poetry, play piano and even have fun with the snow that days before was seen as a punishment and a limitation in his practical life.

I invite you to devote special attention to the scene of him ice-carving her face in the snow and saying while turning it towards her at night: "let me turn it to light". What a subtle way of saying that he is turning his interior -now nurtured and leonine- moon towards his sun: HER! (I see the creative axis ♒️-♌️ being played, And you? What do you see?)

In that moment is when I started to celebrate with a wide smile the Yin and Yang movement narrated in this classic movie.

Her only work in this kind of "purgatory state" of him -but of the utmost importance- was to point with words the right direction for his soul to break the loop, the illusion of time and matter in this "Groundhog Day" forecasted as an eternal winter to him.

By seeing and hearing her, he is no longer stuck into a rough weather or any kind of punishment. Her honest words liberate him because they -the words- have been heard and so they have enchanted him.

Believe it or not, and probably because she studied XIX Century French Poetry at college -"what a waste of time!" he said once unconsciously- words were powerful mouthed from her pretty lips and make him have the courage to step into a new dimension of his own being, feeling healed and whole.in a new dimensionHappy Groundhog Day or how to spot your shadow and bring light and warmth to your winter season.
