Syllabus Design & Didactic Unit

Syllabus Defence & DU Exposition

The video above is my example of how to defend the Syllabus Design and exposition of a Didactic Unit in the EOI civil exam, but you can adapt it to Secondary Education & Baccalaureate having in mind the legal context and steps I give you bellow in this post.

The next video is an example of how to present and defend a Didactic Unit for the Linguistic Accreditation in the Community of Madrid.

Let me help you to write your Syllabus Design for your subject or for your civil exam.
I can prepare you for the defence and the exposition of one of your 15 Didactic Units.

There have been meaningful changes in the way of writing on paper what you probably are already doing in your schools, so... don't panic! and let's work together in how to have this work done for your peace of mind and for the good of your English department, your own teaching process and success in the civil exam.

Physical characteristics of the Syllabus Design:

Should be an original and individual work from the candidate; of 80 pages length (front page and index not included); DIN-A4, printed on one side; type font Arial 12, two single-space pages; margins: top and bottom - left and right of 2,5 cm; the same for supporting material and activities. Read the call here to make sure you are doing it right.

Should include a front-page in which it must appear your full name, ID number and the school year you are teaching.

Remember the general outline of the Syllabus Design and the 15 detailed Didactic Units, pay attention to the specific words:

0. Index

1. Introduction

2. Legal Framework: (see bellow)

3. Context: characteristics of the neighbourhood, school, families, students, classroom.

4. Bare in mind that you need to write around 20 Objectives for the Syllabus Design of the entire course or copy them from the Royal Decree or Decree of your Community which are in the introduction to each subject (see Annex II).

5.  This is the longest part of it. "Didactic Unit" is what in Spanish Educational new Law LOMLOE is called "Programación de Aula" (Classroom Programme = Didactic Units).

Each Didactic Unit has in its central core: Objectives or Aims, Operational Descriptors, Specific Competences, Contents or Basic Knowledge divided in 3 groups (Plurilingualism, Multiculturality & Communication) and Assessment Criteria.

My recommendation is that for the Syllabus Design of the entire course you design each term with 5 Didactic Units of 2 weeks length: 15 Didactic Units in total; with 1 Learning situation in each unit or at least 1 per term.

5.1 You need to know the Key Competences (Annex I of the CAM Decree), they gives us the Output Profile of each stage, Secondary or Baccalaureate.

5.2 "Contents" are called now "Basic Knowledge" and are divided in three groups: A) Plurilingualism; B) Interculturality; C) Communication. (Annex II of the Royal Decree or Decree)

5.3 See that the Specific Competences are linked to the Operative Descriptors and the Assessment Criteria are given in the law. (Annex II of the Decree of Madrid.)

6. Methodology. From each Royal Decree of Secondary or Baccalaureate read the Article 6. Pedagogical Principles and Annex IIII, Learning Situations.

7. Procedures and assessment tools

8. Attention to Diversity

9. Materials & Didactic Resources

10. Transversal elements. e.g: a Reading plan; projects of the school: STEAM, bilingualism; cross-curricular projects between departments, etc.

11. Extracurricular activities or complementary. e.g: Theatre, Debate Tournament, Museum, etc.)

12. Assessment of the teaching process

13. Conclusion

14. Bibliography & Webliography

15. Appendix (make an index of the appendices if they are a lot)

As you can see that's why it is essential that you read the law, from which - I'm afraid- there is no escaping. Your syllabus has to be designed according to what is established in the following legal framework:

Legal context for Secondary
(1º,2º,3º,4º ESO):

- Organic Law 2/ 2006, of 3rd May, of Education (L.O.E) that provides the general framework in our education system as well as the principles and stage objectives in the first year of ESO.
- Organic Law 3/2020, of 29th December, which amends Organic Law 2/2006 (LOE-LOMLOE) provides the general framework to complete the LOE and to refurbish and add an element of fine-tuning to the current educational system.
- Royal Decree 217/2022, of 29th March, which establishes the basic curriculum of Secondary Education.
- Decree 65/2022, of 20th of July, which establishes the curriculum of Secondary in the Autonomous Community of Madrid.
- Decree 2876/2018 on the 27th of July, which establishes the curriculum of Bilingual Education in private and state-founded schools in the Community of Madrid.
- Decree 29/2022, de 18th of May, which regulates specific points about the assessment, promotion and qualifications in Compulsory Secondary Education & Baccalaureate as well as in the teaching of adults.
- Circular letter from the Directorate-General for  Secondary Education Level, Vocational training, and Special Regime for the planning and organisation of Baccalaureate in this academic course 2022/2023.

Legal context for Baccalaureate:

Organic Law 2/ 2006, of 3rd May, of Education (L.O.E) that provides the general framework in our education system as well as the principles and stage objectives in the first year of BACCALAUREATE.
- Organic Law 3/2020, of 29th December, which amends Organic Law 2/2006 (LOE-LOMLOE) provides the general framework to complete the LOE and to refurbish and add an element of fine-tuning to the current educational system.
- Royal Decree 243/2022, of 29th March, which establishes the basic curriculum of Baccalaureate.
- Decree 64/2022, of 20th of July, which establishes the curriculum of Baccalaureate in the Autonomous Community of Madrid.

And here I share 3 books and 3 websites that can help you at the time of writing your syllabus design:
