Review Conditionals with me
Every time someone asks me to explain the use of conditionals I always start by explaining what a "speech situation" is. Why? because that is the principal social context to identify their use and decide whether to use the zero one, the first, the second or the third one.
In order to make this short and clear I'll place here the graphic or chart I designed and I use in my coaching:
Now, all you have to do is to put pen to paper and take notes:
0 Conditional is based on a fact or a scientifically proven fact.
structure: [If + present simple, present simple]
e.g: If it rains, the streets get wet.
1st Conditional is based on a negotiation or a possibility.
structure: [If + present simple, future]
e.g: If you clean the kitchen, I'll clean the living room.
2nd Conditional is based on a desire, a wish or an advice given. It's clearly an hypothetical situation. That's why we use the past as the subjunctive form.
structure: [If + past simple, conditional simple]
e.g: If I were* you, I would read more often.
* spot the difference with the regular past simple: I/he/she pronouns go usually with "was", but not in the 2nd Cond., they do that to emphasize the subjunctive use.
3rd Conditional is based on an expression of regret but also on thanking somebody or something in your life. It's clearly a situation recalled from the past with certain nostalgia.
structure: [If + past perfect, conditional perfect]
e.g: If it hadn't been for you, I wouldn't have passed the exam.
Now, remember that you can twist the sentence and invert the order of the clauses, it will look like this and it will make the comma to disappear.
e.g: I would have been lost If it hadn't been for the app of Google map.
Keep writing examples on your notebook, don't copy from any source! okay? 😉 and... if you are already my coachee, I'll give you feedback as soon as you send me your sentences by email.
Can you identify that conditional? I'm sure you can at this point.
